چکیده

This work deals with the observer siting problem in terrains represented by digital elevation matrices. This problem consists in minimize the number of observers needed to see (or cover) a given percentage of a terrain. Two heuristics are proposed to solve this problem and these heuristics are compared with a method described in literature. Tests show that the proposed heuristics generate solutions that use an average of 7% less observers than the heuristic described in literature.

A Dijkstra Algorithm for Fixed-Wing UAV Motion Planning Based on Terrain Elevation

Abstract. The automatic motion or trajectory planning is essential for several tasks that lead to the autonomy increase of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). This work proposes a Dijkstra algorithm for fixed-wing UAVs trajectory planning. The navigation environments are represented by sets of visibility graphs constructed through the terrain elevations of these environments. Digital elevation mod...

Optimising Visibility Analyses Using Topographic Features on the Terrain

The advantages of using the fundamental topographic features of a surface namely the peaks, pits, passes, ridges and channels as the observers (viewpoints) in visibility computation is presented. Considerable time can be saved without any significant information loss by using the fundamental topographic features as observers in the terrain. This optimisation is achieved because of a reduced num...

Siting Multiple Observers for Maximum Coverage: An Accurate Approach

The selection of the minimal number of observers that ensures the maximum visual coverage over an area represented by a digital elevation model (DEM) have great interest in many fields, e.g., telecommunications, environment planning, among others. However, this problem is complex and intractable when the number of points of the DEM is relatively high. This complexity is due to three issues: 1) ...

Presenting a Morphological Based Approach for Filtering The Point Cloud to Extract the Digital Terrain Model

The Digital terrain model is an important geospatial product used as the basis of many practical projects related to geospatial information. Nowadays, a dense point cloud can be generated using the LiDAR data. Actually, the acquired point cloud of the LiDAR, presents a digital surface model that contains ground and non-ground objects. The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach of ex...

Image Compression Terrain Simplification

We suggest a new terrain simplification algorithm which is based on known Digital Image Processing compression methods (e.g. DCT , wavelets compression) that was specially adjusted to fit Digital Elevation Models. DEM-images are terrains or elevation maps represented as gray scale images. We investigate the special nature of such terrain-images and design a unique pre-compression process which ...
